How Turin Epicurean brought me back to blogging

It’s been a busy year. After my last post on my Halloween pumpkin extravaganza I have been working head-on in food education leading two separate projects and also teaching at a secondary college. But now I am back to blogging thanks to Turin Epicurean, an exciting three-day kermesse that will see me chairing one of their roundtable events, hosting food and wine enthusiasts to my Italian hometown.

Preparing for the roundtable and updating this blog today provided me with a timely escape from the heatwave engulfing London. I left the house at dawn to take my dog on a long walk then we both retreated home, open windows and fan keeping us cool as I read through the bios of the other hosts and prepared my questions for them.

It’s funny to see how different people from different walks of life end up falling in love with food and wine. How careers changes, house moves, or simply a long life passion for what we eat and makes us happy, all lead us towards devoting our efforts to the teaching, writing or making of food.

For me, what drove me to change my career from journalism to nutrition and food education was realising how food always played a part in my life and how important the act of nourishing ourselves is to both our health and our culture. I will be asking Amanda Courtney what made her switch her career from jewellery design to wine education and move from the hustle and bustle of LA to Neive, the charming town in the heart of Langhe where my family owns a historical winery.

And what was it that turned Patricia Boner from a picky eater as a child to a curious and itinerant foodie, who chronicles her discoveries in her blog, Foodie Sneak Peeks? She’s also a fascinating melting pot of food cultures (born in Peru to Chinese parents, she now lives in Switzerland and travels the world) so I will no doubt find lots to ask her.

Last by not least, I hope to come away from the roundtable with some tips on jam making from Jennifer Williams of Naked Jam. She prepares her concoctions in the tranquil English countryside making her jams an interesting combination of fruit and foraged ingredients. Who knows what I will discover!

So I want to thank the lovely Lucia Hannau for inviting me to this amazing three days. She found me online through this blog, and after I wrote a guest post for her in 2015, she kept checking on me (and on my furries: we are both animal lovers) and we never lost touch.
I am really looking forward to meeting you all.

Torino, here I come!!!

Just wanted to mention you that I got to Luiset and bought some salami to bring home … Last night we tried one with nuts and another one with truffles; they were both delicious. I also like the fact that they use biodegradable bags! Thanks for the tip!!!
